There are so many smoothie recipes out there claiming to be healthy, the reality is that most smoothies are super high in sugar (yes the body still sees natural sugar as sugar!) this creates a spike in our blood sugar levels, just when you eat a naughty bar of chocolate! This then creates a crash later on and we end up feeling tired and grumpy, and in the long run do as much damage as that bar of chocolate...
A smoothie should give you a stable flow of energy, a boost of vitamins and ingredients to help aid digestion and improve nutritional absorption.
To create the ultimate smoothie, here is the "Secrete" smoothie formula:
1. Protein - to help stabilise insulin and blood sugar levels thus keeping you full for longer. What protein source can be added to a smoothie? Collagen, Protein Powders, avocado, chia seeds or nuts such as almond, cashew or peanut butter (nut butter is best so the smoothie is not grainy)
2. Vitamin boost - This should be the bulk of the smoothie, use low sugar fruits such as strawberries, blueberries and pure açaí (dont use the processed açaí with added sugar & junk!) these berries are not only super high in antioxidants, but they are also loaded with vitamin C to help strengthen your immune system. if you want to add apple in your smoothie, green apples are lower in sugar, just dont peel them as most of the goodness is on the skin! The final vitamin booster ingredient are lots of dark leafy greens, herbs and micro-greens. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll and fiber but are low in calories (so you can go as crazy as you like!)
3. Fats - Yes that's right! the naughty four letter word FATS are a great addition to a smoothie to fuel your brain and actually help you loose weight!. Fats help you feel full for longer, and they won’t trigger the insulin high and crash. Good fats to add to your smoothie include; avocadoes, coconut oil, coconut flesh, nuts & nut butters (double win with fat & protein!)
