Zero Waste Living - Laundry - May 2020
I'm Pauline, creator of Nature and Health by Popo.
I am passionate about zero waste living and reducing our exposure to nasty chemicals.
Today I'd like to talk about laundry (I'm going to try to keep it short, promise 😁)
I have a few easy tips to reduce your waste and also your cost whilst making your laundry smell nice and fresh.
First of all, I turn my hot water off, this is for our every day wash. Now, when I wash my partner's work clothes or wash something very dirty I do turn the tap back on.
Next step, after you finish your laundry detergent, invest in soapberries. This will change your life (especially your wallet's life for the long term). Soapberries are a specific type of nuts which basically release soap when out in water. I personally put 5 nuts where I used to put my detergent (on only need 3 if you use hot water as it activates the nuts more). Each nut can be used up to 5 times, to check, just give it a squeeze and if it's too soft I change it. You can now put your berries in your compost, plants, veggie patch or in the bush as it is 100% from mother nature and therefore that's where it should finish its life too 😁. It is also a natural pesticide when you use it in your plants.
With the nuts, I use some home-made softener, I simply get Epsom Salts (at the bulk shop) and I mix with some essential oils. I use the equivalent of 2 Tbsp per load of washing(in the softener compartment) . You could just use Epsom Salt without essential oils as well. The salt with lift grease and dirt from your clothes as well as making the fabric softer and it will also keep your washing machine cleaner.
Last but not least, I use a laundry tonic (that will leave my clothes smell amazing), this would be great if you use plain Epsom Salt as softener. I do a mix of essential oils in a 15ml dropper bottler and I add 1/4 of a droplet per load (in the softener compartment again). I usually try to make my Epsom Salt and tonic match in terms of essential oils but you can use any oils that you like. I would recommend oils such as lavender, tea tree, citrus, eucalyptus because of their cleaning properties as well as their amazing and strong smell.
This is it for my laundry article.
I hope you've enjoyed reading this and will swap maybe one of your product for a zero waste one next time you run out.
